In elite sports, the difference between winning and losing often comes down to the mental game. This windsurfer's story shows how top athletes are reframing psychology from a tool to fix problems into a proactive strategy for peak performance.

Windsurfer Maciek Rutkowski Frames Mental Coaching as a 'Competitive Advantage,' Not a Weakness

Professional windsurfer Maciek Rutkowski credits his decision to hire a mental performance coach as a key strategic move for gaining a competitive advantage in his sport. After a strong seventh-place finish in a 2017 event in Denmark, Rutkowski realized that his physical skills and equipment were largely in place, but his race-to-race consistency depended heavily on his mental state and decision-making. His initial search for a sports psychologist was frustrating, as he found professionals who failed to connect with or understand the specific demands of windsurfing.

The turning point came after observing the improved performance of fellow competitor Enrico Marotti of Croatia, whom he suspected was receiving mental coaching. After pressing Marotti for a contact, the two athletes began sharing a coach, partly to make it more financially viable to bring him to competitions. Rutkowski argues forcefully against the notion that seeking psychological support is a sign of weakness. Instead, he equates it to other forms of performance optimization, such as refining equipment or physical training, viewing the mind as just another critical component to be honed for an edge on the water.

"A lot of people say, 'Ah, it's so mature of you to realize your weakness.' It's not weakness, it's competitive advantage. You work on your gear, you work on your mind, or you work on your body. It is the same thing."
